ACU Library guide to referencing in APA7 style

Basic elements

Click on the elements below to learn about the basic requirements for referencing books and ebooks in APA 7 style.  For information on citing book chapters refer to the page on citing a Chapter in an edited book.

The basic elements and formatting of books and ebooks are:

Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year). Title of the book: Subtitle (Xxx ed.). Publisher. https://doi.org/xxxx

Authors
  • Provide the surname and initials of the book authors as listed, with a full stop after their initials. Leave a space between initials.
  • Commas appear after each author, except the last one.
Year
  • Enter the copyright year in brackets. End with a full stop.
Title of the book: Subtitle
  • Capitalise the first letter of the first word in the book title and any proper nouns (e.g. Australia) that appear in the book title.
  • For a two part title (ie. with a subtitle), capitalise the first letter of the subtitle (after the colon).
  • Format using italics.
Edition
  • If the book has an edition or volume number (other than the first), enter in brackets after the title, but before the full stop.
Publisher
  • Include the name of the publisher, followed by a full stop.
  • The book's publisher will normally appear on the title page (one of the first few pages of the book).
  • Do not include publisher's location.
DOI
  • Include a DOI (as a live link) if available.
  • If no DOI is available, do not include a web link if the book was accessed via a library databases (such as Ebook Central, EbscoHost, Informit, ClinicalKey or Springer).
  • No full stop goes after the DOI or URL.

About DOIs and URLs

Use the decision tree below to determine when to include a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) or URL in your reference.

Is there a DOI for the ebook?

For ebook citations:

1. Is there a DOI for the ebook
  • YES → Include a live DOI link in your reference
  • No → Continue to question 2
2. Did you access the ebook through a library database (e.g. Ebook Central, Clinical Key, Ebsco)?
  • YES → Do not include a URL in your reference
  • No → Include a URL in your reference

Notes

  • What is a DOI? Most online journal articles as well as many ebooks will have a Digital Object Identifier. It is a unique identifier that provides a persistent link to the work, e.g. 10.1111/jofi.13290.
  • DOIs are formatted as hyperlinks, e.g. https://doi.org/10.1111/jofi.13290.
  • If the work has no DOI, the URL is not needed if you read the work in print or accessed it via an academic database (such as Ebook Central, Clinical Key and ProQuest).
  • Functioning, shortened links can be used for long URLs or DOIs.
