ACU Library guide to referencing in APA7 style

Basic elements

Click on the elements below to learn about the basic requirements for referencing journal articles in APA 7 style.

The basic elements and formatting of journal articles are:

Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year). Title of the article. Name of the Journal, volume(issue), #-#. https://doi.org/xxxx

Authors
  • Provide the surname and initials of the article authors as listed, with a full stop after their initials. Leave a space between initials.
  • Commas appear after each author, except the last one.
Year
  • Enter the year of publication in brackets. End with a full stop.
Title of the article
  • Capitalise the first letter of the first word and any proper nouns (e.g. Australia) that appear in the title.
  • Do not put in italics, or surround with inverted commas.
Journal Title
  • The journal title appears in full and in italics.
  • Capitalise all major words in the title and follow with a comma.
  • List the journal title in full ie. do not abbreviate the journal title.
Volume
  • Enter the volume number in italics.
  • No space between the volume number and the brackets around the issue number.
Issue
  • Do not italicise the issue number or brackets.
  • If there's no issue number, follow the volume number with a comma.
Page range
  • Include the page range, with a dash between the page numbers.
  • No space between the page numbers and the dash. End with a full stop.
DOI link
  • Enter the article's DOI as a live link if available.
  • There is no full stop after the DOI link.

DOIs, URLs and database links

Use the flowchart below to determine when to include a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), URL or database link in your journal article citation. DOIs are often located on the first page of the journal article.

Do you see a DOI? Yes: Include the DOI as a web link in the reference. No: Was it available via a library database? Yes: Do not Include the URL in the reference (ie. cite with no DOI or URL). No: Include the URL in the reference.

Notes

  • If a DOI is available, include it in URL format (https://doi.org/xxxxxx) at the end of the reference.

  • If the work has no DOI, the URL is not needed if you read the work in print or accessed it via an academic database (such as Ebsco, Informit, ProQuest, ScienceDirect). Exceptions are specialist health resources (like UpToDate, MIMS, AMH) where the content of articles changes over time.

  • If the work was accessed from a website (excluding from an academic library databases, such as EBSCO, Informit, Proquest, ScienceDirect) and there is no DOI, include the URL in the reference.

  • Copy and paste the DOI or URL directly into the reference list to avoid transcription errors.

  • Convert DOIs and URLs into live links within your reference list.

  • Functioning shortened links can be used for long URLs or DOIs.
