Chicago A: 18th edition

Guide to the 18th ed. of Chicago A (Notes and Bibliography)

Bibliography checklist

Formatting

  • The title "Bibliography" appears in bold and is centred at the top of a page.
  • The Bibliography page is single spaced throughout, with a new entry on each line.
  • Use a hanging indent for all entries (where second and subsequent lines are indented).
  • Check that all URLs included are functional and ensure consistent punctuation and formatting throughout.

Entry organisation

  • All entries are arranged alphabetically by the first author's surname.
  • Multiple works by the same author are organised alphabetically by title.
  • Works without an author or editor are alphabetised by title (ignoring a, an, the).

Author name formatting

  • The first author's name is inverted (Surname, Given name(s)). However, maintain the original order for authors whose cultural naming conventions place the family name first.
  • Additional authors are listed in normal order.
  • For 7+ authors, list the first three authors followed by "et al."
  • Group authors are spelt out in full (for example, Australian Catholic University).

Entry types to exclude from the bibliography (in Chicago style these typically appear as in-text citations)

  • Religious scripture, chatbot conversations, and personal communications.
