ACU Library guide to Chicago B: author-date referencing style

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

You should seek clarification from the Lecturer-in-Charge (LIC) of your unit to see if it is permissible to use AI in your assessments.

According to the University's Student Academic Integrity and Misconduct Policy (8.1.c) unauthorised or undisclosed use of artificial intelligence is a form of academic misconduct.

If you refer to content produced by AI tools, for example ChatGPT, you must acknowledge it properly.

Check the Chicago Manual of Style Online or the FAQ Citation, Documentation of Sources for any updates.

ChatGPT

You acknowledge the use of AI tools such as ChatGPT in text. You do not need to cite the tool in the reference list.

In-text

…"dramatic irony creates tension and suspense as the audience knows more than the characters." (ChatGPT, June 14, 2023).

Notes

  • Place any information not in the text in a parenthetical text reference, for example, (ChatGPT, June 14, 2023).
  • Details of the prompt (response) can be included in the text.
  • Use the day the chat was generated as the date.
  • ChatGPT is considered the author and OpenAI is the publisher or sponsor of the content.
  • Do not cite the AI tool in the reference list.
