Text and data mining (TDM) is the process of using computational methods to search for, extract and analyse large amounts of text or data. The purpose of TDM is to identify patterns, trends, or relationships in data. Data collected by others (secondary data) is typically used for this process and can come in a variety of formats ranging from text to qualitative and quantitative datasets from previous studies, repurposed to answer new research questions. See the Text and data mining guide for resources and tools to help you find, evaluate and analyse secondary data in accordance with responsible and ethical research practice.
Data visualisation is the broad term for the practice of representing data in a visual interpretation. The aim is to summarise and clearly depict data to support understanding and the potential generation of new insights.
See the Data visualisation guide for information and resources on visually representing your data.
