Is it safe to use ChatGPT for your task? A flowchart description.

Start: step one

Does it matter if the output is true?

  • If no, proceed to step two.
  • If yes, proceed to step three.

Step two

Safe to use ChatGPT, stop.

Step three

Do you have expertise to verify that the output is accurate?

  • If no, proceed to step four.
  • If yes, proceed to step five.

Step four

Unsafe to use ChatGPT, stop.

Step five

Are you able and willing to take full responsibility (legal, moral, etc.) for missed inaccuracies?

Considerations

  • Any generated output needs to be used critically and cautiously.
  • Always acknowledge where and/or how you have used AI tools.

The ability to critically evaluate the output from GenAI tools is a crucial skill. As an ACU student, you have a responsibility to evaluate and verify the responses you get from GenAI tools, and not rely solely on the generated responses.

GenAI is prone to making up facts, commonly referred to as hallucinations. This can include inaccurate or even fabricated references; therefore, it is crucial to critically evaluate AI-generated information and verify the facts by cross-referencing with reliable sources.

Remember that just because it sounds authoritative, doesn't mean it is correct. Being aware of these problems, can make you more digital savvy and fluent in using Gen AI tools.

GenAI can alleviate some of the cognitive load but should never replace critical thinking and engagement with information.
