A guide for Higher degree and Early career researchers

This guide provides information about the services and support available for ACU Higher Degree and Early Career researchers at all stages of the research life cycle.

Managing your references

When working on extensive research projects, you will need to collect, organize and format all the various materials (articles, books etc.) that will be used in the final project. 

Citation Managers are tools that help you keep track of, and organize, this personal research library. They allow you to:

  • Capture and store references as you search library databases, google, and save PDFs
  • Re-find those references by searching your own collection
  • Make notes about those references
  • Integrate with MS Word to quickly create in-text citations and bibliographies in the style that you need (thousands of styles are available)

ACU Library recommends that you use EndNote software for managing your references.

Installing Endnote

  • Make sure no other applications are running.
  • Double-click on the file you have downloaded.
  • (If a folder window opens, copy all the files in it onto your desktop, then double-click on the ENX7Inst.msi file on your desktop.).  If are asked for a product key, make sure all files are copied to your desktop and run them from there.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. You can choose to install EndNote as is, i.e. Full installation, or you can customise your setup.
  • By default, EndNote is installed in the C:\\Program Files\EndNote X7 folder. You can change this if you wish.

*** Please note!  If you are asked for a product key, copy all the files onto your desktop and run them from there ***

  • Make sure no other applications are running.
  • Double-click on the EndNote X7 Site Installer.dmg file you have downloaded.
  • The Install Location is set to use (or create) an EndNote X7 folder in the Applications folder of your startup drive. You can change this if you wish.
  • Full Installation is selected automatically. Choose the Custom Install only if you are low on disk space or you want to install only parts of the EndNote program.
  • Click on Install.

  • Insert the EndNote CD into your CD or DVD drive.
  • If the CD doesn't automatically load the EndNote install application:
    • Double-click on My Computer, then on the icon representing your CD or DVD drive.
    • Double-click on the file ENX7Inst.msi.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. You can choose to install EndNote as is, i.e. Full installation, or you can customise your setup.
  • By default, EndNote is installed in the C:\\Program Files\EndNote X7 folder. You can change this if you wish.
  • Make sure no other applications are running.

  • Double-click on the EndNote X7 Installer icon and click on Continue to proceed.
  • The Install Location is set to use (or create) an EndNote X7 folder in the Applications folder of your startup drive. You can change this if you wish.
  • Full Installation is selected automatically. Choose the Custom Install only if you are low on disk space or you want to install only parts of the EndNote program.
  • Click on Install.

What is EndNote?

EndNote is software for storing, managing, searching and sharing references.

EndNote:

  • keeps records including details of books, book chapters, journal articles, websites, conference papers and theses
  • organizes records in groups and allows you to add keywords, labels and notes
  • creates and formats reference lists in a selected style, eg. APA, Chicago, Harvard, MLA, Vancouver
  • stores articles for you (eg. PDF files)
  • saves records from search engines and databases
  • searches library catalogues and resources like PubMed to find items

GET ENDNOTE

EndNote is free for our staff and students and is available for download to your computer (approx. 100MB).  Contact ACU Library for assistance if required.  If you are unable to download EndNote, you may request a USB drive containing the ​EndNote installation file.
