Starting your research

When you begin to research a topic, a good place to start is using Reference tools like:

1. a Dictionary - to find the definition of terms (this will help define your topic);

2. an Encyclopedia - to get general background information about a topic; and

3. a Thesaurus - to find synonyms and other similar keywords (to use for searching).

Useful Educational Thesaurii

A subject thesaurus is a controlled vocabulary which includes subject terms for a specific discipline. The Education thesaurii listed can be used to find the most appropriate search terms for use in specific databases.

A thesaurus usually contains hierarchical relationships, from general to more specific concepts. You may come across the following abbreviations:

  • BT (Broad term)
  • NT (Narrower terms)
  • RT (Related terms)
  • UF (Used for)

A scope note explaining the meaning of the term may also be included.
