About EndNote

EndNote is software that :

  • keeps records including details of books, book chapters, journal articles, websites, conference papers and theses.
  • organizes records in groups and allows you to add keywords, labels and notes
  • creates and formats reference lists in a selected style in Microsoft Word or Open Office Writer documents. Use styles such as APA, Chicago, Harvard, MLA and Vancouver.
  • stores articles for you (PDF files)
  • saves records from search engines and databases
  • searches library catalogues and resources like PubMed to find items

Get EndNote

EndNote is available, free of charge, to all staff and students of ACU. To get your copy, there are several options:

  1. Download it to your computer - please complete this online form and begin the download
  2. Visit your nearest campus library to borrow an EndNote CD.
  3. Get an EndNote CD mailed to you - please complete this request form

Please Note: If you are using Office 2010 you need EndNote version X4 or higher. Go to the EndNote X7 tab for more information.

By accepting the EndNote software from ACU, you agree to abide by the following Conditions of Use.

Conditions of Use:

  1. The software is available to current students and staff of ACU. Your right to use this software ends when you are no longer a staff member or student at ACU.
  2. The software must not be lent, given, or sold to anyone else.
  3. The software may only be used during the time of the licence agreement. The current agreement ends on August 18, 2014. The EndNote software must be removed from your work and home computers at this time.

When upgrading to EndNote X7 from a previous version, you are highly recommended to copy any used specialist styles from your previous version's style directory to the new EndNote styles directory (eg C:Program Files/EndNote X7/Styles). Otherwise, it may be necessary to retrieve additional styles required from the EndNote.com website.

 

Before Installing EndNote

Backing up existing libraries and other files

Please back up your EndNote libraries regularly, especially before you upgrade. By default, your libraries are stored in C:\\Program Files\EndNote X7 (or whatever version you currently have) on a Windows computer.

If you have customised any filters or styles, you should make copies of these now. The files can be found in the directories C:\\Program Files\EndNote X7\Filters and C:\\Program Files\EndNote X7\Styles

Uninstalling EndNote

You should uninstall previous versions of EndNote before you upgrade:

  • From the Start button, click on Settings > Control Panel > then double click on Add or Remove Programs. You can then select the relevant version of EndNote from the list of programs
  • Click Remove
  • Follow the prompts until the uninstall is complete.
 

Installing EndNote

Installing EndNote from a download

Windows:

  • Make sure no other applications are running.
  • Double-click on the file you have downloaded.
  • (If a folder window opens, copy all the files in it onto your desktop, then double-click on the ENX7Inst.msi file on your desktop.).  If are asked for a product key, make sure all files are copied to your desktop and run them from there.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. You can choose to install EndNote as is, i.e. Full installation, or you can customise your setup.
  • By default, EndNote is installed in the C:\\Program Files\EndNote X7 folder. You can change this if you wish.

*** Please note!  If you are asked for a product key, copy all the files onto your desktop and run them from there ***

Mac:

  • Make sure no other applications are running.
  • Double-click on the EndNote X7 Site Installer.dmg file you have downloaded.
  • The Install Location is set to use (or create) an EndNote X7 folder in the Applications folder of your startup drive. You can change this if you wish.
  • Full Installation is selected automatically. Choose the Custom Install only if you are low on disk space or you want to install only parts of the EndNote program.
  • Click on Install.

Installing EndNote from a CD

Windows:

  • Make sure no other applications are running.
  • Insert the EndNote CD into your CD or DVD drive.
  • If the CD deesn't automatically load the EndNote install application:
    • Double-click on My Computer, then on the icon representing your CD or DVD drive.
    • Double-click on the file ENX7Inst.msi.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. You can choose to install EndNote as is, i.e. Full installation, or you can customise your setup.
  • By default, EndNote is installed in the C:\\Program Files\EndNote X7 folder. You can change this if you wish.

 Macintosh:

  • Make sure no other applications are running.
  • Insert the EndNote CD in your CD-ROM drive.
  • Double-click on the EndNote X7 Installer icon and click on Continue to proceed.
  • The Install Location is set to use (or create) an EndNote X7 folder in the Applications folder of your startup drive. You can change this if you wish.
  • Full Installation is selected automatically. Choose the Custom Install only if you are low on disk space or you want to install only parts of the EndNote program.
  • Click on Install.
 

After Installing EndNote

 Accessing your customised filters and styles

Once EndNote X7 has been installed, you should put any customised filters and styles that you want to use in a location where EndNote can find them. To do this, copy the filters into C:\\Program Files\EndNote X7\Filters and the styles into C:\\Program Files\EndNote X7\Styles.

You can put your libraries in whichever directory you wish; however, you will need to navigate to that directory in order to open them for the first time. It is recommended that you keep your EndNote library with the other files you will use it with (eg the Word document of your thesis).

Running EndNote

Windows: To run EndNote, click on the Start button. Choose Programs, select EndNote, and then EndNote Program.

Macintosh: To run EndNote, double-click on the EndNote icon found in the EndNote folder.

 If you have any problems installing EndNote, please contact the EndNote team via the EndNote form.

 No EndNote X7 tab

After installation, if there is no EndNote X7 tab in MS Word 2007 or later, or EndNote toolbar in Word 2003 or Open Office 3 Writer, run the "Repair" function. Select EndNote X7 from Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features in Windows 7 and Vista) in the Windows XP Control Panel.

Choose "Change" then select "Repair". Click Next on each of these screens until the process finishes. Quit and restart all Office applications and check for the tools in Word.
