This guide will show you how to get and use EndNote at ACU

About EndNote

EndNote is software for storing, managing, searching and sharing references.

EndNote:

  • keeps records including details of books, book chapters, journal articles, websites, conference papers and theses
  • organizes records in groups and allows you to add keywords, labels and notes
  • creates and formats reference lists in a selected style, eg. APA, Chicago, Harvard, MLA, Vancouver
  • stores articles for you (eg. PDF files)
  • saves records from search engines and databases
  • searches library catalogues and resources like PubMed to find items

Get EndNote

EndNote is free for our staff and students. To get your copy, either:

  1. Download EndNote to your computer
  2. Get an EndNote USB flash drive mailed to you

By accepting the EndNote software from ACU, you agree to abide by the following Conditions of Use.

Conditions of Use:

  1. The Software is available to current students and staff of Australian Catholic University. Your right to use this Software ends when you are no longer a staff member or student of Australian Catholic University, at which point you must remove the EndNote Software from all computers
  2. This Software must not be lent, given or sold to anyone else.
  3. The Software may only be used during the time of the license agreement. The current agreement ends in August 2017.

Before installing EndNote for Windows

Especially if you currently use EndNote, make sure to do the following before installing a new version:

  1. Save a compressed version of your EndNote library.
    1. Go to File > Compressed Library (.enlx)
    2. Make sure to select “With File Attachments” and “All References in Library”.
  2. Keep a separate copy of your Output Styles, Import Filters, and Connection Files.
    1. By default, these are stored in an EndNote folder, as follows:​
      • Windows 7/8/10: My Documents\EndNote\​​
      • Windows Vista: Documents\EndNote\
    2. Copy (but don’t delete) this entire folder to another location on your computer – perhaps just create another folder called “EndNote Backup”, and copy the original folder's contents here.

Installing EndNote for Windows

Installing EndNote from a download

  • Make sure no other applications are running
  • Double-click on the file you have downloaded
  • (If a folder window opens, copy all the files in it onto your desktop, then double-click on the EndNoteX8.exe file on your desktop.)
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. You can choose to install EndNote as is, i.e. Full installation, or you can customise your setup
  • By default, EndNote is installed in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote X8" folder. You can change this if you wish

*** Please note!  If you are asked for a product key, copy all the files onto your desktop and run them from there ***

Installing EndNote from a USB Flash Drive

  • Make sure no other applications are running
  • Insert the EndNote USB flash drive into a USB port
  • If the USB flash drive doesn't automatically load the EndNote install application
    • Double-click on My Computer, then on the icon representing the USB flash drive
    • Double-click on the file EndNoteX8.exe
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. You can choose to install EndNote as is, i.e. Full installation, or you can customise your setup
  • By default, EndNote is installed in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote X8" folder. You can change this if you wish
